The beauty of light

As part of my duties this weekend, I shot 162 portraits of sales people. I don’t really do portraits, I’m more of a come what may girl and studio lighting is NOT my forte. Fortunately I work with a guy who is THE jack of all trades and has a fabulous Nikon (yep, Canon girl said Nikon) flash strobe setup that he showed me how and allowed me to use. Between my stands, backgrounds, soft box and cords, his camera, lens (85, 1.4, *lick, *drool), and strobes, we pretty much licked the platter clean. As he was adjusting I stood in for light subject and then would look at the shots and we would change the light, angle, orientation, etc. I feel extraordinarily lucky to have had him there and to have these head shots of moi!

You can tell the light is different on each one. Does this look like mom to you? MM HHM.

Especially by the way my hair is lit.

And the hard shadow under my right eye.

We ended up adding in a hair flash behind me.

And turning the soft box a little more to the right.

In all, for a girl in a hall with her camera, I think I did ok!

Ignore the sass.

We went back to landscape in the end, but these portrait versions show the length of the light.
